Q: Doesn't satellite broadband have a higher latency? What is latency anyway?
A: Latency is the amount of time taken for data to be sent from one point to another, in this case from your computer via satellite to the ISP's servers and connection to the World Wide Web.
The satellite orbits at an altitude of over 22,000 miles and it takes a little longer to transmit internet data to the satellite and back than it would to use an ADSL connection.
With satellite broadband you still have a high capacity connection although you may notice a slight delay in your web-browsing.
Online computer gamers should call us to check that we meet your requirements.
Q: Why is this more expensive than broadband over my phone line?
A: Most properties in the UK have a phone line although not all are able to have ADSL broadband due to distances from the exchange. The capacity that a high performance ADSL connection provides (24Mpbs) is far greater than what can be achieved with mass-market satellite services (4Mbps).
Satellite broadband services are provided by a finite number of satellites orbiting the earth and they cost a lot of money to put there. Even at today's copper prices, you get a whole load of phone lines for the price of only one satellite. There are therefore constraints on the amount of information which can be transmitted via satellite and which therefore, through market forces, it is priced as a premium service.
